TSGL: ddhelp

Thanks Don, I just downloaded the new DX 9.0. I had an idea that it was
direct X involved somehow. The thing that gets me is, I can play an avi or
mpeg without any problems at all, even via a website, what seems to be
causing the error is that what ever is playing the file (usually Windows
Media) seems to hang somehow, so that when I close IE I get the error. This
may be right after playing a video file or it may be an hour later, but it's
always when I close IE. Never when I start to play a video file or during
the playback, and never when I play a video file locally, only off the web.
Anyway maybe the DX 9 will help things. (I also did the new update for
Windows Media Player, just in case).

Yeah, Bill, that ddhelp is associated with DirectX. Here's the
explanation from the MS DX site:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
DDHelp.exe is DirectDraw's "helper" program. Its purpose is to make
first contact with the video driver, assess its DirectDraw capabilities,
and send the driver into DirectDraw compatibility mode.
This is very simplistic. However, when a user has display issues in a
game or a game doesn't launch, it may be because the game cannot get the
video driver to switch to the proper resolution to run it. This will
sometimes manifest itself as an error in the file DDHelp.
Another one of DDHelp's functions is to perform the resolution switching
chores for DirectDraw and Direct3D.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would try running the DX diag app (Start/Run, type DXDIAG) and see if
you get any suggestions about the prob from that. The current version of
DX is 9.0b. I'm pretty much always up to date with DX versions since I
play a lot of 3D games. Otherwise you have to download the latest
versions manually. Not sure if DX is included in the MS updates?
Anyway, dunno why you would all of a sudden start getting the errors. Or
why IE is causing it. If you haven't made any graphics changes to your
PC, (like new vid card, switching resolutions, changing video drivers,
or installing any 3d games), maybe your DX install has gotten corrupted
somehow. If DXdiag doesn't suggest anything I would try reinstalling the
vid card drivers, or downloading version 9.0b of DirectX.
Good luck,
Don K
