TSGL: Missing mass

I've just acquired a 6-month old new computer. XPPro SP1.

I have a puzzlement about the C Drive.

C-Drive Properties (My Computer) indicates that on a 20Gb partition (I've
just re-partitioned it) there's 14 Gb used and 6 Gb free.

But I can only see around 8 Gb used.

I've rebooted twice since the re-partition.

I've run "scanner" which is a little utility to visualize a drive's free
and used space in graphic form. It reports the same as I see--namely 8 Gb
used and 14 Gb free. Why doesn't the computer see this? What could
possibly take up 6 Gb invisibly?

I can see Pagefile.sys and Hiberfil.sys, which are included in my 8 Gb of
used space, so they aren't the reason. I have the system set to "Show all
hidden files". System Restore is set to 800 Mb, so that doesn't account for
the missing space either.

Maybe it's the answer to the cosmological question of the missing "dark
matter" in the Universe. It's all residing on my hard drive.
