Yes - This is a good solution.

Yes - It would just be another drive letter.

Yes, if you're running Windows XP or Windows 2000 you would just plug it in. 
  He *may* need to temporarily copy the songs he wants to burn from the 
external drive to the C: drive before burning, but if he's making CDs 'every 
day' he should find this a piece of cake.
