Just a comment on Gmail: You can set it up as a POP3 account. There are
detailed directions in Help pages on how to configure your e-mail client to
access Gmail as POP3.

My best advice is to use a good reputable ISP which offers a good
anti-spam and anti-virus service. Most of the better ISP's should offer
this free of charge.
You'll find that their anti-spam devices should be much more efficient than
any internal software you may install. I don't find any need to use any
internal anti-spam software.
For any that might get through, Eudora has excellent and very simple
filters.
GMail has a good reputation, though of course it has all the disadvantages
of a web-based email system, which personally I dislike.
But, of course, all that means changing your email address---and you may
not wish the one-off inconvenience of that.
