Dave,
what OS do you run? Win XP or an earlier version?
On the web there once was a tip like this: If you run into problems with the menus, rename the file mso97.dll and all the files that start with mso7*.dll. I don't konw whether Word will then ask you for the original CD to replace the files. You could as well rename and afterwards replace from the CD
Do you still have enough space on your HDD?
does this happen with ALL documents you try to save, or just one or a few? And does this happen with new files too?
If it's only a few and already earlier saved away doc(s), it/they could be corrupted. To resolve such problem you can try this:
Method 1: Convert the File to Another Format, and then Convert it Back to Word.
Method 2: Copy Everything Except the Last Paragraph Mark to a New Document.
Method 3: Copy the Undamaged Portions of the Document to a New Document.
Find more at http://experts.about.com/q/Microsoft-Word-1058/Word-97-5.htm
If this happens with all your docs, I don't have an answer at that time. AFAIK this could also be a spyware or trojan infection
In case you have Office 97 - how is it with e.g. Excel? Same weird behavior?

Betreff: TSGL: Peculiar Word 97 Saving Glitch
Here's a weird one: For some months now, even after a fresh reinstallation
of Word 97, whenever I attempt to save a doc, whether as save or save as,
the dialog window that opens has a button labeled "Open" at the bottom,
rather than the correct button "Save" (the title bar is correct as Save
or Save as)
and of course typing in the new file name is an exercise in futility,
because it can't be found.
There are workarounds, but they are cumbersome.
I thought by reinstalling it the problem would go away, but also, no luck.
Does anyone know the intricasies of the Word portion of the registry so I
might correct this absurd situation?
This might finally drive me to use OpenOffice full time! The only reason
I still use Word 97 is that I have hundreds of docs in that format, and
I don't have to fool with persistent nags (well, maybe I do now).
