Thanks Tilman for offering more alternatives than anything I've found
via MS Help!:

XP Pro SP2
> On the web there once was a tip like this: If you run into problems with the menus, rename the file mso97.dll and all the files that start with mso7*.dll. I don't konw whether Word will then ask you for the original CD to replace the files. You could as well rename and afterwards replace from the CD

Just tried the renaming, then started Word, which didn't complain about
the changed files but also didn't fix the save.
Also found that Wordpad will open a Word doc and save or save as quite
normally.

Not an issue. 3 HDs (114.47 GB aggregate, 52.74 GB free; +60 GB USB2

When in Word 97, all old and new. I just dug up the oldest .doc I could
quickly find, from January 2000, opened it and tried to Save as. Same
thing: the Explorer dialog box shows "Save as" in the title bar, but
the button shows "Open".
I really can't recall when this started, but it's been close to a year.
My workaround has been to leave Word closed, then use File Manager
(oops, Explorer --- how I detest that stupidly confusing change!) to
duplicate the file, then rename the copy (these are mostly simple dated
reports) to the new date, then open it in Word and change the data.
Recently that
wouldn't work because I couldn't save anything, so I was forced to use
Wordpad or OpenOffice Text instead.
I even tried creating a new template using the normal procedures
but got the same problem when saving it.

> Method 2: Copy Everything Except the Last Paragraph Mark to a New Document.
> Method 3: Copy the Undamaged Portions of the Document to a New Document.

Doubt that last, as there's always been a garrison of troops, originally
Norton, now NOD32, ZA Pro, plus Spybot S&D,
AdAware Plus, PestPatrol, and occasional scans from online freebies.

Nope, Just Microsoft Home Essentials.
[{{{sigh}}}], I suppose I could try totally uninstalling Word 97 then
reinstalling it, but I've avoiding doing that
because of the numerous security fixes that have become necessary in
recent years. I'd hate to go through
that hassle. The last Winword version number is v8.0.0.8909 (8.0b)
Internal Name is MSword.
