TSGL: OE Slowdown

Mike,
with automatic updates - if you have XP - would update to IE 7 I guess, but I doubt that OE is touched by this, OE7 is still Beta AFAIK and will only ship with Vista. Actually it'll also change the name and be a different product ;-)
There may smaller updates or fixes for OE6 be coming with updates however.
You could btw check your IE under Help ('?') | Info or similar for the version you run.
One trick might help in case there's a problem email in one of the folders. Before you follow this tip you should save away all your email folders and emails to a different place though, one you can remember afterwards!
"Go to OE, Tools, Options: Maintenance.
Half way down on the right side are two labels:
Click on Clean Up Now. "

Defragging is another option if you haven't done this in a timely manner .
On the web I've seen a slowdown problem mentioned after installing IE7 - that guy I recall got rid of the problem by uninstalling IE7. I don't know whether this is the best option. Maybe others can add their experiences.

Tilman,
Nothing new scanning emails. I've used AVG email scanner for quite some
time.
I don't keep a lot of email folders or emails in OE. Deleted regularly.
I allow OE to compress files every time it asks, which is fairly regularly.
I did install Spyware Terminator a few weeks ago, but I'm not aware of any
email scanner in it.
Did Microsoft update OE anytime recently? I allow automatic updates of IE,
but I don't know if that includes OE updates or not.

Mike,
a few ideas right off of my head:
1. Any newly installed/updated/set-up Antivirus or spywaredetection etc.
software sanning your emails?
2. Email folders grown too big, too many messages in them?
3. Try compacting the folders from Files | Folders | Compress ... or the
like
That's all for the time being
Tilman
