TSGL: OE Problem after installing AVG 7.5

Mike,

Some blue sky speculating here.

Simple things first. Make sure your firewall software is not blocking
the new (and unrecognized) version of AVG somehow.

Your error message mentions port 5110. Port 110 is the usual POP3 port
for receiving mail. If you were not using Mailwasher and AVG e-mail
scanning your e-mail client would look at port 110 for incoming mail.

When you add Mailwasher and AVG the incoming message must be directed
to, say Mailwasher first then AVG then OE. I don't know the actual
order. I think each of these sets up proxy servers on your local machine
(just other ports, I think) to make the message available to the next
program in line. Obviously if the proxies are out of whack or when you
reinstalled AVG the sequence of proxies got mixed up the path is broken.
I'm guessing (because the number is so similar to 110) the port 5110
mentioned in your error message was set up by one of these programs to
pass mail along to the next one. The high number ports are not assigned
to anything permanent and are used ad hoc by programs as needed.

On my AVG v7.5 the proxy shows "automatic" and it's set to port 10110
(similar to 5110) for POP3. I don't use Mailwasher and my Tbird has yet
other ports which were specified by gmail which is what I connect to for
mail.

I would look at the proxy settings for all the programs and see if you
can deduce anything. If that fails try reinstalling all three again in
the order you did originally, if you can remember. If you can't
reinstall OE, try to get it working without the others (just turn off
the AVG e-mail scanning) then add the others one at a time. Did you ever
make any proxy settings manually.

Also, google the error text "0x800CCC0E" or a little more of it. I came
up with a lot of hits.

Even if this doesn't work the delay might be enough time for someone
that knows what they're doing to respond. Or maybe someone will realize
that this so far off base that they can't bear to see you suffer any
more and pass along some good info.

Good luck,

H Davis
