John,
if the original OE emails do not appear, but instead a fresh, clean installation, in general it's an indication of either deleted/lost or moved program & data folders. Creating a new (maybe additional) identity inadvertently and having OE start with this one next time would also show you a pristine, empty mailbag (=inbox).
In most cases if your *.dbx files seem to be gone, they aren't really lost, but instead just moved, sometimes (unknowingly) deleted into the recycle bin where one can find and restore them. Your friend should be able to find them by doing a thorough search through all the drives and folders.
'... suddenly lost all his emails'
It's of paramount importance to find out what he did in order for all to happen. An installation of new software? Anything else which might destroy or move the original OE folders? Hard to tell from a distance ...
You'll find more detailed tips & help at http://www.insideoe.com/problems/ and especially http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone or also http://www.oehelp.com/
Herzliche Grüsse in den Odenwald!
Tilman

Hi,
A friend using a new PC (XP Home, AMD 3200+ 512MB RAM 120GB HDD)suddenly lost all his emails, wherebye a fresh install of Outlook Express appeared with the usual introductory email from MS. No populated .dbx were to be found.
In desperation, I finally tried a system restore and, hey presto! everything was back.
This has happened twice in two weeks. Firewall, AV and antispyware are in place.
Any ideas?
John

P.S. Hope this gets there this year...
