I use the Window Live "one care" program weekly to clean the registry and
the disk and disk fragmentation if necessary. I also use Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool and Trend Micro House Call on a weekly basis.
Is that good enough to do what ERUNT does or not?
Would it be wise for me to find a stand alone file cleaner?
I was looking at programs to download on PC World's download site and came
up with the following and wondered if anyone knew anything about them or
recommend them.
_DustBuster_
(http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22384-order,1-page,1-c,harddisk/description.html)

Get rid of unnecessary files and directories on your hard drive.
_Clean System Directory 1.7_
(http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,4143-order,1-page,1-c,systemresourcestuneup/description.html)

Remove all those stray DLLs from your system.
I also use the following, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Award SE Personal,
PC-cillin, Spy Sweeper & Windows Defender.
Maybe one of the programs that I use cleans unnecessary files, directories
or stray DLLs, that's above my knowledge and I don't touch anything that I
know nothing about. I'm afraid of messing something up.

I do a registry backup every 2 or 3 months---it only takes 10 seconds with
ERUNT, so that takes care of newer software.

If the computer really starts to get pretty hairy, and you have go back to
an original registry, say a year or two old, then, yes, you will have to
reinstall most of your programs. That's very rare, as the incremental
restorations keep the registry pretty clean in general. Certainly far
cleaner and more reliable than any "Cleaner" will achieve.

But that's not a bad thing, it really doesn't take long, your software is
nice and shiny new again, and you won't bother to reinstall all the stuff
you might have thought a good idea at the time, but never actually got
around to using.

Of course, it's essential to keep all your installation CD's and
downloads--I burn the latter to a CD every 6 months to keep them up to
date, discarding all the older versions which have been superceded.

It's just another alternative to cloning your OS partition---for those of
us who don't have good cloning software, or find that process too complex.

For more details, see my Web tutorial on registry backups.
