TSGL: DVD-RW Drive has disappeared

Dieter,
maybe the TSGL system does work, I'm anyhow missing messages
continuously, pretty often my own messages like the one you are
answering to now. Have had that some time ago too. This quirk - or
whatever it may be - makes it pretty difficult to continue reading and
answering to messages. I'll watch this a little longer, not knowing what
to do in order to improve things.
As to the BIOS (also called setup), you can access it directly after
startup (power-on) by pressing a certain key. Which one does depend on
the make of the BIOS - we have discussed several such options on this
list some time ago, if I'm not totally mistaken. Have a look at what
your opening screen says, most systems will tell you which key it is. On
my machine it says F2 = setup , earlier I had one where I had to press
Del.
As soon as you get the Bios screen with all it's options, just page
through the settings - you'll probably find a page showing all the
drives , the CDs and DVDs may be on a different page. You should find
the DVD there, otherwise there's a problem with the connecting port, the
cabling and/or the drive (and possibly its master/slave-settings)
itself.
Try NOT to change any settings. But if you do it inadvertantly, don't be
afraid. Before you exit you will be asked whether any changes should be
saved. Here just select NO !
If you don't find your ways through your brand of Bios, just tell us
which kind it is (AMI, American xxxxx etc.) and also the version, shown
on top of the screen. Maybe somebody with that brand can then help you
find the DVD - if it's there. You may also look up
http://compreviews.about.com/cs/pchardwarebasics/a/aaBIOS.htm and also
it's page 2, where you'll find info on drives in the BIOS.
Have you btw tried to connect the DVD to a different machine?

Mhhhh ... I guess they should. I'm not too sure though how USB devices
are being handled. Maybe somebody els can give you a hint there.

Tilman Brandl ...
Seems like the TSGL system is still working.
Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with the BIOS. Where would I go
and
what would I look for to find verification of my "dropped out" DVD-RW
drive?
If you prefer you can explain it to me off-list.
My scanner and printer are listed in the control panel; but shouldn't
they
also be listed in the device manager? Both are working fine.

Dieter,
I'm having doubts whether this will ever show up on this list, the last
message I sent did not ...
Your DVD-drive has disappeared from device manager, but did it disappear
from the BIOS too?
If it doesn't show up in the BIOS, then there's something very basically
wrong:
Check all the connectors on the drive + on the motherboard too. You MUST
see
it in BIOS, otherwise Win XP will not recognize it either.
I've recently had a case myself with a DVD drive that had simply died
electrically ...
Check (1) drive, (2) cables and (3) port by adding the drive into
another
machine if possible, attach it to a different IDE port: if it's on IDE
2,
add it to IDE 1 instead. Try cvonnecting it with different/new cables
...
Connect it as a single (master) drive on IDE 2 if it hasn't been
already.
This way you should be able to decide whether the drive is faulty or
not.

Did you look under scanners? Or printers? I would anyway not be overly
alarmed if they both work well as you said ...

Betreff: TSGL: DVD-RW Drive has disappeared
I have noticed some recent DVD-RW streams. I would like to throw in
my
problem. I am running XP Pro SP2.
My DVD-RW Drive entry has disappeared from my PC ... there is nothing
listed
anywhere ... there is nothing in the Device Manager and nothing in My
Computer. Of course the hardware is installed and is impishly
blinking
whenever I put in a DVD. The s/w that came with the DVD-RW has
nothing on
it to help me. I can't play back and can't burn DVDs. My CD-RW and
CD-ROM
drives are working fine. Is there anything that can be done to remedy
this
situation?
While I was looking around in the Device Manager (where I seldom go
and
look), I noticed that my USB scanner and printer were both nowhere to
be
found. Is this a normal occurrence? Both pieces of hardware are
working
fine.
Your comments, as always, are appreciated.
