Almost the same performance, the cat6 is coated with gold contacts and that makes it a little bit faster. Can be used for KVM switches (keyboard, video and mouse.

Cat6 cable is used in network applications such as 10Basae-T, 100base-T, 1000Base-T ethernet technology to 100 meters (328 feet) and have been designed specifically for gigabit ethernet applications (gigabit over copper) perform at high data transfer rates and work with ATM and gigabit speed products. These cable delivers improved performance over standard cat5e cables.

Is there any performance difference between CAT5 and CAT6 cable when used to
connect modem to PC?

Hi Daniel,

.. if you've got the time & nerves to test this kind of setup, just go ahead. Would possibly help some people if you find out that it actually DOES work!

But: From my past knowledge of electronics (from my earlier life as a telecommunications engineer) I wouldn't bother to try. You'll end up with two (or even more) different kinds of signals under a single shielding, which means asking for trouble. OTOH, there are AFAIK different kinds of cat 5 cables out there. If you happen to have the "Screened Twisted Pair" type, your idea would maybe work. This type is in use mainly in Europe if I'm not mistaken.

Personally I would probably add a 30 m phone line to what you already have, which is simple, easy and unexpensive. Otherwise, what about a cordless phone for this station? You can get one for about 25 $$ over here in Europe.
