Thanks..........it worked, pairs 1&3 are used for the computer NIC in my
case and I picked out the other pairs and used two to connect the phone.
Now I know I've saved a lot of money......

This will work... you need to leave wires 1,4,5 and 6 connected.
Cat5 100megabits uses 2 pair, which is 4 wires for those who can't count
lol.

well for that you will need to google around a bit.
Alternatively, you could make your computer wireless and just use the
cat5 for telephone :-)
By the way... try not to handle the wiring too much, also, make sure you
are terminating into fascia mechs, not rj45 plug ends.
The reason for this is that the cabling that is used in walls is single
strand, move it around too much and it wont work efficiently, if at all,
any more.
Wires in patch cables are multi-strand, commonly 6 strands.
