If you do try the illogical (!), when you get to running defrag after 
,removing' pagefile, you may find it doesn't do the job. It may be necessary 
to delete pagefile.sys on c:

That's one (of many) possible solutions when it happens normally, but I
doubt it explains why the problem is only happening in Safe Mode. If
anything, Page File should be more stable in Safe Mode than ion normal
mode, I'd have thought.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway, it's certainly worth trying, even if
illogical (they're often the best solutions!).
