Thanks for that Craig. Those references should be invaluable to store away 
for future use. I haven't seen them anywhere else.

But the thing is, Safe Mode loads only essential basic drivers---and, as 
far as I can ascertain, none that would not be loaded in Normal 
mode.  Which seems to limit the possibilities, and seems to rule out a 
driver problem.

When I get back to his computer, I'll disable all the drivers I can find, 
and see what happens then.
