TSGL: Free Software

Frankly, I don't see any software they have offered in the last week or so
as being any better than the freeware that is offered elsewhere. In fact,
some of it looks downright scary. Today a Registry Cleaner that may trash
your computer is a good example. Why fool with it when there are good,
proven applications that we know are not dangerous? In fact, why fool with a
registry cleaner at all if you are running Win XP or Vista?

But it's that "special verification program and agreeing to the Terms and
Conditions" that bothers me the most. How much Spam will this generate? Will
we have to agree to allow the software to "phone home"? Without even reading
the agreement, I'd guess yes.

The web page, itself, has advertisements. There is nothing wrong with that,
but I decided to take a look at one of their advertisements, an inducement
to see how happy you and your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, etc.
were together. So I typed my first name and my wife's first name in and was
then asked for my astrological sign. Frankly, it is my opinion that
Astrology is phony, but I supplied the information. It then asked me for my
Cell Phone Number, indicating that the results would be sent to the phone.
I'm not giving my Cell Phone out to any web site or advertiser, because,
frankly, I am afraid of what they may do with it. And that is my opinion of
this web page. Useless software for a price, the price of information that I
am and should be afraid to give them.

I've just come accross this site www.giveawayoftheday.com

I've downloaded a couple of things, A2 an AVG gave them a clean bill of
health.

It appears to be legitimate, this is from their web site:

Giveaway of the day - what's that?

Well, that's a convenient initiative allowing you to get the best
commercial software titles - for free. Every day we offer licensed
software you'd have to buy otherwise, for free! Yes, we are giving
away software, and you can download it from our site, right now and
right here and our goal is to give away every good piece of software,
sooner or later.
<snip>

Basically, every day we nominate one software title that will be a
Giveaway title of that day. The software will be available for
download for 24 hours (or more, if agreed by software publisher) and
that software will be absolutely free. That means - not a trial, not
a limited version - but a registered and legal version of the
software will be free for our visitors*.

The software product will be presented in its full functionality,
without any limitations save for those mentioned in Terms and Conditions.
<snip>
We will pay the software publisher for the Giveaway license, and our
visitors will only receive those after downloading a special
verification program and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions, thus
protecting software publishers' interests and making our initiative
beneficial for both clients and publishing companies.
