Bo,
here's my take:
You didn't tell us which kind of hardware ... there may be different
methods. If you want to apply the method to different kinds of hardware, it
might be difficult or at least tedious to poll everything. If it's a single
specific kind of device, for instance removable harddrives, it's certainly
easier.
