Hi,

thanks to you guys for some great hints.
I've meanwhile downloaded Lupas Rename and PicNamer (thanks to Ron!) and
will check them out these days.

As to simple renaming, my TotalCommander file manager can do this with great
ease, but doesn't show me any pics along that process.

I guess Picasa (which I have, but didn't use for years) could be helpful
too - something to check as well.

Thanks again
Tilman

Subject: TSGL: Software for sorting & re-numbering pictures

  Hi,

I'm searching for software with good capabilities for handling / sorting/
  creating slide shows.

Background: On our Chicago to Tucson tour last summer I gathered around
500
  photographs - using:

1- a small digital camera which produced numbered pics, containing
exif-data
  (dates).
2- my heavy SLR which produced pics with strange composite numbers after
  digitizing. (no dates)

Back home I made a quick selection from all the pics, cat 1. & cat. 2 and
  created new numbers for them.

My problem: I need to reorder some of the pics and I also have edited
versions of several of them which I need to insert in specific positions.
I
could rename again, leaving space for adding new and re-sorted pictures -
for instance like this: us07-pic-0001, us07-pic-0003 etc. (all are *.jpg).
It can be done with what I have at hand. But ...

...is there any software that would be helpful in sorting and renumbering
slideshows according to the new manual sort order? I use Irfanview for
checking Exif dates, and my file manager that's pretty good with renaming.

I would be grateful for any hints
  Tilman
