The best hardware firewall is supposed to be a separate computer, set up as 
such, which is really what I had in mind and about which I have no 
experience. I believe some techies use their old computers for this 
purpose. I'm struggling to find enough space for paper and pencil (What are 
paper and pencil, the younger ones amongst you may well ask).

Routers are also reputedly good if you are lucky enough to have one and 
know how to set it up properly.
