TSGL: Toshiba Satellite CD Boot Problem

Continuing trying to find a solution, I have disabled all boot options
except the CD ROM. All I get is an error message of "Media test failure.
Check cable" and "Exiting PXE ROM".

Perhaps the CD ROM is not working properly. It does spin the CD, but there
doesn't seem to be a way to determine if it is actually reading the CD.
Unfortunately, the Toshiba Splash Screen covers up drive detection, so I
cannot see if the drive is being detected ... which leads to the question
... Is there someway to get rid of the initial Splash Screen?

I am trying to find myself. If you see me before I do, please ask me to wait
until I return.

Thanks, Jon, but this cannot be done. The machine Blue Screens before
Windows opens. And the Safe Mode Menu does come up, but it Blue Screens
during Boot up there, too.

As I said, the problem is in the Registry. I'm not sure I can repair that,
but I can't even use a CD Boot Disk to take a look or to even to run the
Recovery Disk. I'm at an impasse.

I'm sure others have had this problem where the machine will not boot from a
CD. I've just never run into this in the past, and I haven't been able to
find a solution through an internet search.

Hi Russ,

You could try start/run/msconfig

boot.ini
boot options
click on safe boot
re-start

Should then boot immediately to safe mode. (should...)

A friends Toshiba Satellite P25-S5092 is failing to boot, Blue Screening
with a "c0000218 Registry File Failure" error message. It is pretty clear
his registry is messed up. I tried to boot it going to a previously good
configuration, but that didn't work. Safe mode, of course, doesn't work
either.

I wanted to back up the hard drive before going any further, and loaded an
Acronis True Image Boot Disk into the CD/DVD drive. The boot bypassed the CD
and attempted to load Windows. I opened Setup and made sure that the CD/DVD
drive was the first boot option and tried again. Windows attempted to open.
It was suggested that perhaps I should hold down the "c" key until the word
"Toshiba" appeared on the screen. I did that, and again it was back to
Windows.

I have also attempted to boot with a Windows XP Pro disk, Windows XP Pro SP2
Slipstream disk, and a Linux Boot Disk. These all fail and the computer
attempts to boot to Windows.

Any suggestions? Thanks .
