Dieter,
if I'm not mistaken, it's a security measure: Since converting the volume might damage data on that drive (this shouldn't happen when converting a drive, different to what happens to partitions), they let you confirm the command by entering the OLD volume label. The latter is the name that drive was given during setup or any time later.
Find it for instance under 'MyComputer' - Harddisks (or similar). Either you'll see the names there already or you can select 'properties' from the respective drive's context menue.

I want to convert my external G: drive from FAT32 to NTFS. After ... CONVERT G: /fs:ntfs ... it asks me to ... enter the current volume label for Drive G:. I don't understand the question. What precisely is it I have to enter?
I tried to name the drive ... External Drive G: ... but that doesn't work.
