Joe,
I really don't actually know where your problem lies, but Norton Internet
Security 2006 seems to cause problems for a lot of the folks I know. I'd
look there first.

I am trying to find myself. If you see me before I do, please ask me to wait
until I return.

This happens to me using Word 2003 but not earlier versions. It's preceded
by a noise like a low pitched dental drill. No other Office 2003 app has
this problem, and Word XP works fine.
I worked directly with a MS tech on this. He was able to show that Word
2003 worked normally if I started the pc with none of my normal autostart
programs. So I suspect that one of my security updates caused this, but
it's too time consuming to investigate which. I use NIS 2006, AdAware SE,
Spybot 1.4, and Webroot SpySweeper. If we have an intersection here, we
might find the culprit - assuming it's the security software.
When I asked some computer literate friends about this, one wrote back:
Strange, I've had the same sound in a certain circumstance and my computer
freezes. Here is how it happens on my computer:
I save a program from the net to My Documents. I open My Documents and
double click on the exe file. I then get a (security)box asking if I want
to run this file. (Meanwhile My Documents is open in the background.) If I
attempt to close My Documents before running the file, I get the "drilling"
sound and everything freezes up. Sometime C/A/D will not close everything
up and I have to exit the system. So I now leave everything alone and let
the file run.
I waited a few months and tried Word 2003 again - same problem.
______________
Word 2003 is now working correctly after I installed NIS 2007. As part of
the install, Symantec (perversely) demands that you uninstall Spybot S&D
and Windows Defender. After doing so and installing NIS 2007, Word 2003 is
now working correctly.
