TSGL: How to remove shares from folders

With every instance I have seen of Windows XP, no folders or drives are
shared. When I have set an entire drive to be shared, Windows generates a
warning message. If I right-click on the root directory of a drive, select
Properties and then click on the sharing tab, the tab states: "To protect
your computer from unauthorized access, sharing the root of a drive is not
recommended. If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of
the drive, click here."
When I right-click on a folder and select properties and then sharing, under
the heading "Network sharing and security" it states: "As a security
measure, Windows has disabled remote access to this computer, However, you
can enable remote access and safely share files by running the Network Setup
Wizard. If you understand the security risks but want to share files without
running the wizard, click here."
In other words, folder sharing is not enabled by default. It is unclear to
me how your drives became shared. It's not the default and it isn't very
secure. You may wish to go to Control Panel/System Properties and click on
the Remote tab. Be sure both check boxes are clear.
Hope this helps.
Ron

I have been doing some research on shares and have come across the following
sites:
http://www.antionline.com/showthread.php?t=233879
http://www.jinx.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38610
http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=5055
It seems that all drives are automatically shared and cannot be unshared.
The shares are automatically enabled at reboot. The only way is to modify
the Registry. My point is if this is the default, how come that MS Baseline
security analyzer is telling me that I have too many shares, when I cannot
remove them, not easily that is. I have 7 shares for the 7 partitions.
Presumably it cannot be all that unsafe with shares on, as otherwise MS
would have done something about it.
Perhaps others can check whether their computers have shares enabled or not.
It must be if that is the default and they cannot be changed.
Win XP Pro with SP2 and all updates
Kind regards
Hasanat
