Joe,
Go to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Volume(tab)
Make sure the box next to Mute is checked, then, left-click a number of
times on the volume slider handle/pointer.
Questions:
1) Does the sound tone from each click sound exactly the same as those
events feedback sounds you hear in Word and Excel?
2) Do those event sounds from Word and/or Excel have the same tone no
matter what the event actions are that initiates them?
3) Does these event sounds appear to you to be coming from the
tower/case in the case of an desktop PC?
If you are able to answer ''yes'' to all three Q's then that means those
'soft beeps' you get are coming from a mini speaker mounted on the main
board. This device operates quite independently to the main board's
integrated audio and/or plug in sound cards.
Such mini speakers serve a purpose primarily for technicians
troubleshooting the main board for problems and as such, it should
always be enabled and not killed to keep it quiet.
To go a long way to reduce the sound it makes you could consider
taping/soft-gluing a piece of card or foam material over its face to
muffle the sound it makes.

Let us know how you get on!!
