TSGL: iTunes/Quicktime queston

My wife just got an iPod.

After all the downloads & installs ituneshelper.exe and quicktime load in.

Questions:

Must these load at startup or can they be on demand (i.e. started 
only when needed?

Assuming that they don't have to start when the machine starts, how, 
other than using the mscnfig can I change them to run only on demand?
