First thing I'd try is uninstall and reinstall AVG.
Otherwise, there's probably a conflict with something else already running
in the background.
What happens if you reboot and run the scan in Safe mode?
Does it only happen immediately after an update? Try rebooting after
updating, though it shouldn't be strictly necessary. Possibly the update
install is not properly closing down before you scan. Open Task Manager and
see what's running. In particular, close Run.dll if it is open, as this can
conflict with other apps and doesn't need to be running all the time. As it
is a core Dll, some progs don't close it after they've run it.
Check carefully what is running in the background, HP are notorious for
having a lot of their proprietary stuff running, which can be incompatible
with anything non-HP.
In general, AVG is pretty reliable, though it can occasionally need a
reinstall.
