TSGL: AVG Anti-Spyware Locks Up PC Occasionally???

Thanks, Don. I'll try your suggestions. This thing is strange. I just
downloaded the 7/6 update for AVG Free Anti-Spyware and it downloaded
and is running just fine as a Fast Scan as I write this. And the scan
started on the first attempt right after the update downloaded. As I
mentioned in my earlier post, yesterday's update locked up my pc four
straight times that required power down reboots. Also, I just checked
and "run.dll" is NOT running in the background. And yes, the problem
only happens right after an update.
I did a complete reinstall of AVG last week when I started getting error
messages. I discovered that the uninstall component of AVG that is run
from the ADD/REMOVE feature of the Control Panel does NOT remove all the
old AVG files. I kept getting error messages when trying to reinstall
AVG until I did a file search and deleted all remaining files for the
old version of AVG. After that, the download installed fine. And it's
been running the updates fine until yesterday. I'll try your suggestion
of the reboot using Safe Mode the next time it locks up.
You're sure right about the proprietary junk that HP systems leave
running. On both my desktop and laptop HP systems I've gone thru and
unchecked most of them (those that I was comfortable closing) from the
Startup routine.
I've used the free AVG AV program for years without problems and I agree
that AVG is generally quite reliable. I'll let you know what happens if
I have further problems. Thanks again for responding.
