Thanks, Justin. I tried out your suggestion and it worked once. On 
re-opening FF, however, connections were blocked again. To cut a long story 
short (4 hours!), it turned out to be my firewall (Comodo) that was 
regarding FF as 'suspicious' and blocking it. Otherwise, I like Comodo a lot 
and can't understand how this came about. Anyway, it all started with the 
FF-update...

For problem number 1, how about uninstalling all known copies of Java from
the Add/Remove programs list, then reinstall a single copy of Java. hope
this works.
