When your computer goes into standby or hibernation, it places everything
that's open into memory.
When it re--opens, it needs some more available memory to do so--it's a
rather complex trade-off. If you have a lot of things either running or
running in the background, this may leave it with not enough memory to pull
itself back to life.
It therefore helps to close down at least your running apps before going
into standby, and maybe also check that the background stuff isn't taking
up too much memory. XP seems to sort this out a bit better than previous
systems, though it's not infallible.
I use a tiny free utility called "Closeall" which is ideal for this. Put a
shortcut to it on the desktop, create a keyboard key to the shortcut ( I
use the "0" key on the numeric keyboard)--one click on that key and all
running progs in the taskbar instantly close---but not the background
stuff. http://www.ntwind.com/software/utilities/close-all.html .
