Barrie,

Avast usually scans the System Restore area and all other restricted system
arease during a startup scan anyway... is it a startup scan you performed?
(startup scan only works on particular versions of windows by the way, it
might be worth putting the hard drive in a different machine and scanning
it.)

You may be infected with Virtumundo spyware.

try running virtumundobegone.exe... you can find the file here...
