Might this one meet your needs? http://www.emdem.com/html/lama.html
Overview
Lama (LAN MAIL) is a simple application to exchange short mail messages between computers on a local area network.
The network protocol used (TCP/IP, NetBeui, IPX...) is irrelevant since the software will work with any connection protocol.
Sent and received messages can be saved.
Messages can be directed to a specific computer only or be sent to all computers on the local network.
Usage
Unzip the file in a directory of your choice. To have the program start with Windows and have it running in the background, ready to receive messages, a shortcut must be placed in the "Startup" program group.
To remove the software just delete the directory in which you have placed it and remove the shortcut from the "Startup" program group. No files have been placed outside the program's directory nor have any Registry settings been added or altered.
Requirements
Windows 9x or higher.
Registration
Lama is freeware for non commercial use.

Is anyone out there using or can recommend an instant messaging system
to be used ONLY on a local area network. I need something simple, free
and that doesn't connect to the Internet. I need absolutely minimum
features. Just something to replace a loud shout between 2 rooms when
both folks are working on their computers simultaneously.
TIA
