Since there seems to be a total block on these files regardless of which
browser you are using, this would seem to leave only your firewall
settings. Or, possibly, one of your security or a-v progs which might be
set to block all "potentially dangerous" files (Microsoft's usual answer to
everything!)

First check firewall and a-v settings, then disable all your security progs
except a-v and firewall and see what happens. Run Task Manager to make
sure there's nothing still running that might conceivably have any security
settings.

If Zone Alarm is your firewall, note that it has "trusted" and "blocked"
zones, which I find quite confusing (I'm never sure just what a "zone" is
supposed to be).. Go into all these tabs to see if there's anything
relating to zip or pdf.

I assume you've already carefully checked your IE security settings. I
don't know, but it's possible that when you installed Firefox, it might
import your IE security settings automatically. Sometimes they do these
things which is helpful in theory but can sometimes be a pain for
troubleshooting. Try Netscape Navigator as another alternative.

I assume you've already tried System Restore and/or registry restores if
you have registry backups. These are invaluable for fixing most of these
types of problems, as security settings are usually stored in the registry.
