TSGL: I'm back home

Thanks John,
Finally, we arrived back home yesterday. While we were appalled to see the
damage to our forest as we drove up the hill into our community, we were
amazed at what had survived. The firefighters did a magnificent job
protecting us. Our home, our small neighborhood was completely surrounded by
fire. Homes less than 1/2 of a kilometer to our north, east, and west burned
and homes less than a kilometer to our south were burned to the ground.
Our area is still beautiful, but with a lot of ugliness thrown in. I saw
some of the people whose homes, whose life was destroyed standing on their
property, sifting ashes for things which may have not burned. Some were
sobbing, some were just blank faced, showing no emotion. It was sad.
But other people were elated. Their homes were saved, were undamaged. They
lost nothing, except for, perhaps, some food in the refrigerator or freezer
that defrosted or spoiled while the electricity was out. And there was a
limited amount of looting. But there was so many fireman and law enforcement
officers up here checking for that, most of the looters ended up in jail. My
house was untouched.
Oh we did find a couple of problems. The telephone line wasn't working.
There were clothes in the dryer that were still damp after 10 days gone and
smelly. They'll be thrown out. And my wife had just stocked our freezer for
the winter. We had hundreds of dollars of food we will have to throw out.
But that's not a big problem considering what we could have found.
Interestingly enough to mention, while our phone line is out, our DSL, which
comes in on the same line, works. Thus I'm getting this message out to you
... on my new laptop.
My old laptop expired during our trip ... the video card, actually, and
wasn't worth fixing. And for some reason, when I got home, my Desktop
computer failed to boot up after being off for 10 days. All I get at boot is
a cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I'll figure out
something and fix that in the next couple of days, but right now I'm on this
new Core 2 Duo Laptop.
Again, thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
Russ

Hello Russ,
Just a note to say we're hoping everything will be fine when the fires have
disappeared. Obviously, a lot of people
on and off the list are keeping their fingers crossed, so you're well
supported in the virtual world and we'll trust the real one will match up to
that.
All the very best,
John and Pam
