You didn't say which operating system version you are using.
What you describe sounds as though the Desktop appearance has been changed.
Typically on Win9x based systems, if you change the Desktop | Background
you'll find that the "box" containing the labels for your desktop icons has
a background colour that no longer merges with your desktop background. This
can be changed by "playing" with the "Color" option on the Display
Properties | Desktop tab (you can get into this by right-clicking on any
blank part of your desktop and then left-clicking on Properties on the
context menu that pops up).

I have a weird small problem: all my icons on the desktop are "selected"
have rebooted, no change. It doesn't seem to affect any thing. This was
caused by my wife doing 'something'.
Hope everybody has survived the various problems over the last month.
