Bo,

from your description my 1st guess too would be (1) the monitor and/or (2) 
the GPU. So the advice already given by others - trying to change them one 
by one would sound good.to me.

As to graphics cards - people often have an older one around.  If all fails, 
find a computer shop where they are ready to let you try one before you buy 
it.
