TSGL: An Acronis Tale

I can only give support to this warning. I've spent 5 hrs a day for the last
three days trying to rescue my wife's PC. Having worked perfectly
trouble-free for two years, it suddenly went crazy.

System Restore, Safe Mode, Recovery Console, XP Repair, Bart's PE - nothing
helped, so off to image restore, which brings me to the point: I had three
(3!) images from 3 different brands. Not one of them worked. Even a fresh
install of XP failed.

It eventually turned out that the HDD was only working intermittently, i.e.
it stopped spinning when it felt like it.

Using it as a second disk on my PC, on the 4th day I was lucky enough to get
it to spin long enough to copy the big partition, thus rescuing the
important data, but it makes you wonder just what is necessary to get a safe
backup?
