Oh dear, sorry to hear this...

" I was unhappy with the performance of the updated product, and my husband,
who also was up for renewal, was not able even to install it,".

Perhaps you can find the genuine original Home version and activate it?

I just downloaded Kaspersky Internet Security. Since you all are talking
about Avest, I looked for comparisons and found a forum where they discuss
this:

I was running Trend Micro Internet Security, and came up for renewal. I
was unhappy with the performance of the updated product, and my husband,
who also was up for renewal, was not able even to install it, but Trend has
our money, so I'm going to try to get that back. Meanwhile, we're on a
30-day fully-functional free trial of Kaspersky, and so far we love
it! Might as well go ahead and finish out the trial period before getting
new keys. What I like is you pay one price for multiple
licenses--definitely a money saver for home networks.

Anyhow, it's bed time for this kitty cat. G'nite :)
