TSGL: Antivirus software (was: annoying Windows message)

Hi Tilman,

Do you think the product wasn't as good after Symantec bought Norton?
Why did you stop using it?

I've been running Symantec on my present PC for 5 years. But this
past October, when they started e-mailing me to renew my subscription,
I kept putting it off. Coincidentally, the pop-ups started that time.
I'm
cynical enough to think that they either didn't think I would renew and
stopped their protection or they intentionally sent messages because the
first flood of pop-ups were marketing anti-virus s/w. I've heard
they've
been known to release quarantined files on users' PCs when they don't
renew!
Hence, the question about what anti-virus s/w people are using.

Thanks,
Donna

I haven't touched Norton/Symantec since a decade or so myself (after
Symantec had bought it). My choice is the free Avira, a little bit
touchy, but otherwise working silently in the background, with GOOD
ratings a few months ago. Ratings of course are changing each other week
or month, so there might be better ones meanwhile. Anyway, we just can't
rely on MRT alone. Good for a quick check, but by far not thorough
enough.

Tilman
