TSGL: Problems ftp-ing with an all NEW machine

Ian,

thanks for that network drivers idea - haven't checked them sofar, but will
do so. Haven't done so bcs this was a NEW installation on a brandnew PC.
I've sofar never had problems with applying the software that came with the
motherboard & machine. The drivers from such source of course *could* pose a
problem.

FTP: My own ftp client - built into my filemanager Totalcommander - is one
that I've used for years without any problem. What I encountered was when I
tried to ftp via the browser (Maxthon) using a freshly set up ftp
user-account. Normally this is NOT what I do, it was intended to open
ftp-access to selected visitors.

  Hey Tilman,

I'm not much help with the timing out problem, my only suggestion would be
to check you've installed the correct Ethernet drivers for the motherboard
you have. Along with going into Device Manager, viewing the properties of
the network card itself and checking everything seems to be in proper
  settings ( Advanced tab ).

As for the FTP problem, what program are you using? I use SmartFTP(
http://www.smartftp.com ) it has to be the easiest to use and the best
I've
ever seen, you can crash the program in the middle of doing anything and
once you restart the uploading it remembers where it was and asks you if
you
want it to continue from where it stopped..... have yet to see another FTP
  program that could do that.

In your FTP program, check to see that 'PASV' passive mode and 'AUTO' Auto
Transfer Type is selected, I find if PASV isn't enabled I can't connect to
any FTP server outside of my own home network. And have you tried opening
port 21 for that computer itself?

  Thanks

  Hi Joe,

thanks for your experience with this issue

Basically the webspace I got still is brandnew - most of the 2 Gigs are
empty! So lack of space can't be the problem, I guess. But I'll try to
talk
to my hosting provider and find out what they think about it.

Meanwhile I'm still in the process of (continuously) tweaking my new PC's
settings. After installing a new XP system I've not only had the usual
fight

with MS-related problems (had to repair the installation and then couldn't
get any updates! That's solved now...). I also had hard times with
  - frequent bluescreening
  - heavy + very irregular timeout problems with my email accounts
  and such.

I've made 2 steps that appear to have improved things a lot or hopefully
  will do so:
  1. I've changed one of the memory related bios settings (pretty much by
guessing), which stopped (most of) the bluescreening.

2.Then I found people on the web whose machines showed similar symptoms,
and

they solved them by uninstalling nVidia's ActiveArmor firewall. I had mine
switched off but still there... Uninstalled it too now, and am in the
  process of testing things...

So I wonder whether my ftp-problems too were or may be related to these
unfortunate + unexpected problems. Funny enough I've spent twice as much
money for my PC this time as ever before, thinking this would spare me
problems with unreliable components ! HAHA ! I must've had about ten or so
computers at home sofar, where the earliest lasted longest. Since then the
intervals are decreasing. The last one is still standing beside my desk,
waiting for me to find out why it stopped working.

Anyway, I'll watch things and report back here if I find out more.

  Thanks again
  Tilman
