TSGL: XP pro - Now HDD continued problems

Don,

when I bought this machine last Nov. there was nothing hot or shaky ;-) Of
course, there's no guarantee this hasn't chenged since, and I guess I'll
check all the hardware too, just to be sure. Just now the sensors do show
max. temps of about 99 F (37 celsius) - which certainly is ok.

As to the RAM, I guess that's a good idea: If the rebooting comes back more
frequently I'll certainly run a check overnight with my 2 bars. No idea
though how to diagnose intermittent PSU failures ? (the sheer thought
frightens me!) This could only be done by replacing it and watching any
differences in behaviour.

<But I've no doubt you've been through all that>...
LOL - who on earth COULD ever be through all of this. Thus - I'm always
grateful for reminders. In a spot like I am in now one tends to develop
tunnel vision.

Thanks
Tilman

All that flakiness (rebooting, progs won't install, etc) sounds to me more
like mechanical failure, eg overheating, bad RAM, intermittent partial
  power-supply failure)---but I assume you've checked carefully for all
these.

Have you tried running on a single stick of RAM, in an alternative slot?
(one contaminated Ram contact pin could be enough to cause all this).

Presumably you've been running Speedfan or similar to check temperatures.

If you still suspect virus, make sure you disable all System Restores (on
each drive). Viruses sheltering in SR won't usually be picked up by most
a-v scans, and can re-emerge later.

Just a thought. But I've no doubt you've been through all that---
