TSGL: Outlook Express

John,
the only ideas that might apply here:
1. I once read that OE works well up to a limit of about 2 GB. For most
people that does never happen. You could anyway check your OE folder with
the *.dbx files for this, and save away older messages if you're near or
over the limit.
2. Have you tried to repair/compress your folders - in my German version
it's under Datei | Ordner Alle Ordner komprimieren
3. there should be a logfile somewhere showing what exacly happens when you
connect ... it could give hints as to what OE is waiting for. If it doesn't
wait, it could be a server-issue too.
Grüsse
Tilman

Thanks, Cosmio and Russ. I moved my many inbox messages into a sub folder
but it made no difference.
The problem occurs not on downloading the emails but earlier, during
"Receiving List of Messages from Server".

OE doesn't like to have many messages in the inbox. It's a good idea
to try and keep the inbox with as few messages as possible. Keeping
messages in sub folders is not a problem.

Hi Jon,
While I don't use OE, the problem may be similar to a problem I had
using
Outlook a while ago. I had left approximately 400 messages in my inbox
and
noticed that downloading email into this folder was very slow. Moving
those
emails to another folder solved my problem.
I suspect the problem was caused by Outlook trying to sort the new
emails
into the old, checking dates and times on each of the old and the new.

Hello all,
When I click Send and Receive with OE I get a window with
"Checking for new messages on Provider" and "Receiving List of
Messages from
Server"
It takes some 25 secs to run from left to right, then any messages are
downloaded reasonably fast. The 25 secs applies even when there are no
messages.
My wife's PC has exactly the same settings but the operation is almost
instantaneous.
I've tried switching off the firewall and AV, to no avail.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
John
