I am presently running 32 bit Vista on 2 separate 64 bit computers, both
AMD, a 4200+ and a 5000+ without problems. I do not run ZA or AVG on either.
Both run the MS firewall, which, at least for me, is adequate for my
purposes along with a version of Trend Micro for Anti-Virus.

I own a copy of 64 bit Vista, but the DVD sits unused, since, presently
there is no advantage (at least to me) over the 32 bit version since I have
no 64 bit software. The actual advantage of 64 bit computing over 32 bit
computing is that a 64 bit system can process information about 4 times
faster than a 32 bit system and can use 4 times more memory than a 32 bit
system (theoretically), but you need 64 bit software to receive this
advantage. But a 64 bit machine has no problem running a 32 bit Operating
System.

But a 64 bit Operating System may have problems with some 32 bit software,
just like a 32 bit Operating System may have problems with 16 bit software
... and that may be where your problem with Office 2000 may be.

Office 2000 was produced in two versions, 16 bit and 32 bit. Do you know
what version your friend has? If he has 16 bit, that may be the cause of his
problem.

Or, the Office 2000 CDs may have just enough scratches and flaws to make
it's installation unreliable.

Suggestion: Back the system up and the registry ... Uninstall Office ...
check and see if any remnants of Office is left in Program Files, if so,
delete them ... run one of more decent registry cleaners and delete any
references to Office ... Run "Regedit" and search for references to Office,
delete them ... reboot ... borrow a known good 32 bit copy of Office 2000
and install it, using the Key that you previously used on this computer to
install Office originally.

And if you do that and still have problems, well, I guess I just don't
understand the problem.

A friend has bought a new computer with Intel dual-core chip x64. I have
installed XP SP2 32-bit for him, with ZA Pro and AVG.

He has installed Microsoft Office 2000 but the program is reporting various
error messages on opening. (I don't know exactly what). He has uninstalled
and reinstalled. The system is running OK otherwise.

1. Is Office 2000 OK for XP32-bit running on a 64-bit system?

2. Does he need XP64-bit? Would he see any marked advantages? His usage is
very light, no gaming, multi-media, video editing or other frivolities. I
don't see any point in moving him to Vista just yet.
