TSGL: Need non- USA help

Ed,

You indicated that there are Types I and II of the MACF-10 adapter and that
Olympus told you they have stopped importing it into the U.S. Did Olympus
give you an actual part number for the Type I? I've been trying various
Google searches, and it looks as though the Olympus part number is 200837 --
see
http://www.bluedogink.com/olympus-macf-10-compactflash-card-adapter.html --
watch the wraparound when you receive this. That site shows it as
"discontinued." Various other sites show it as "closed out" or "out of
stock."

Some results indicate that the part has been discontinued by the
manufacturer (rather than by the seller). If that part is manufactured by
some other company (in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world), perhaps you
could buy it as another part number (or other numbers) from a company (or
companies) besides Olympus. (I'm thinking along the lines of various
supermarkets' house brand items which may be the same product from the same
supplier/source but with different labels, or VCR tapes made in the same
factory with different labels slapped on the same product to be retailed as
coming from company A, B, or C.) Olympus should be able to tell you the
name of the manufacturer if they do not (did not?) make the adapters
themselves, and you could then contact that third party to find out if your
adapter is being made (or was made) under other names or numbers.

If, however, Olympus does in fact manufacture it outside the U.S. but has
actually stopped manufacturing (rather than simply importing) it, I guess
you'll have to depend on existing new, used, and/or reconditioned stock
wherever you could find it. And, although you have indicated a reluctance
to use eBay, it or a similar site might be your last resort if you really
want the part.

Some of the links I found which MIGHT be helpful are as follows:

http://www.easttrades.com/dh200837.html $44.51 (part number 200837)

http://buy.ebonza.com/Photography/Digital_Camera_Accessories/56015 three
available -- no part number shown -- may be Type II -- link for asking
questions -- ask seller what the part number is (Comparable to eBay?)

http://www.flashmemorystore.com/xdpiccarad.html part no OL200837
$59.95 sale price $44.00 -- discontinued by manufacturer -- provision to
email them about finding the product
http://www.computermemorystore.com/xdpiccarad.html seems to be same as
above (a sister site / alternative name?)

Availability: Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item
will be back in stock.
Request this item from another seller.

from above, click on the "compare prices" link and find "This item is
currently not available.
Alert me when it becomes available"

http://reviews.cnet.com/flash-memory-adapters/olympus-ma-cf10-xd/4505-8898_7
-20822065.html
correct part no 200837 given where to buy link shows: "This product
is currently not in stock at any of our online merchants. Email me when
this product is available "

As with some of above links, email or phone other retail suppliers?
Check with your local retail shops and ask them find out if their suppliers
have any stock left?
Check secondhand shops?
Put on your "to do" list for travelling?

I even tried Olympus' site in the U.S. and found a link for "Reconditioned
at a special price offer for a limited time," but going to the link produced
"Not in stock." (I guess the time limit is up!)
The link is
https://emporium.olympus.com/innards/empproddetails.asp?sku=200837-420 ,
where you can also read as follows: "Olympus defines a "Reconditioned
Product" as any product that has been returned by our retail partners or our
customers. Once the product is returned, Olympus conducts a rigorous
evaluation of the appearance and all product functions to make sure that the
item meets our quality standards. Your product will function identically to
a brand-new Olympus product, however it is possible for a reconditioned
product to have a scratch or blemish on the surface. "
Perhaps you could make enquiries as whether there is a waiting list for a
reconditioned adapter.

I have NOT tried Olympus' sites elsewhere, but you might want to check other
world area links at their corporate site --
http://www.olympus-global.com/en/global/ -- to see if you get any further.

H Davis -

Thanks for the try. I had gone that route before, but now I tried it again.
They are terribly sorry, bu Canon does not make an adapter for the xd card
and cannot even recommend a place to look. That's why I asked the 'guys' for
a non-USA source.

Regards. ED
