Some good (and free) anti-virus and a firewall is a good thing such as
www.grisoft.com/ and ZoneAlarm.

Other favorites I always install on by system include
Irfanview - image/picture viewer at www.irfanview.com/
SyncBack - free back up sw at
http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbse.html
Google Earth - to get a good look on our planet while it's still there
CCleaner - clean your PC from junk files at http://www.ccleaner.com/
Skype might also be a good choice if you want to be in contact with your
dad

This weekend I'm configuring a new-to-him Windows XP PC for my dad.  I'm
hoping people can share their lists of what they put on a new PC when
they configure one.  I know about the ususal stuff: Flash player,
Winzip, Quicktime, Firefox.
