I'd suggest Quicktime Alternative instead of Quicktime, simply because 
it has less bloat than the real thing.  Foxit Reader is a superior 
alternative to Adobe Reader for the same reason.  Your father may be 
interested in Yahoo Widgets for some desktop information availability.  
TaskswitchXP is a neat alt-tab replacement, at least in my opinion.
