One possible suggestion re: BIOS ...

Remove the battery and short out the contacts with a screwdriver. Put the
new battery in and try to boot. 

Justin,

What Don means by "no access to bios" is that pressing the key to enter
setup does not work ... the screen remains frozen.

New cmos battery made no difference. Still freezing at end of POST screen. 
No access to bios.

Tried several known good keyboards.

Done Justin's suggestion of removing memory chips one at a time.
