TSGL: MS July Update

To All,
I'm using XP SP2 on 2 machines. I have my MS updater set to notify me
for both downloading and installing.
I got the notification for the July update a while ago which consisted
of KB951748 and the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) only. I had
seen comments on another list about problems with this update if you
were using ZoneAlarm (and perhaps any 3rd party firewall). I checked the
ZA forums and sure enough ZA had issued an update to correct the problem
which was theirs and not MS's so there would be no MS fix coming. I
installed the ZA update on one machine, waited a day and downloaded the
update.
I can't be sure what was actually downloaded because you don't get any
real confirmation of that but when, on the next day, I got the
notification that the updates were ready to install, I checked Custom
Install so I could see what it planned to install and only the MSRT was
there offering to be installed. I "installed" that and then checked the
Add/Remove list to see if KB951748 had been installed clandestinely.
Nope, not in the list.
I didn't know what to make of this but I went to the MS site and
downloaded the 748 update and installed it manually. It now appeared in
the Add/Remove list. All seemed well.
Yesterday I installed the ZA update in the second machine and today
downloaded the July MS update. Both items were offered for downloading.
When it said it was ready to install the 748 part was missing again but
the MSRT was there. I haven't installed the 748 update manually yet.
Soooooooo, What's going on? Have any of you folks seen this problem? If
some of you have updates set to full automatic, do you have KB951748 in
your Add/Remove list? Even if you get notifications as I do but use the
Express Install option you would probably not have noticed that the 748
part was missing; do you have KB951748 in your Add/Remove list? If you
updated when your computer shut down did you notice if there were 1 or 2
updates?
Everything seems to work properly on the one machine that I updated
manually but, as with all things MS, when things don't go exactly as
they should I get a sinking feeling right in the pit of my stomach.
TIA,
H Davis
