TSGL: Any Thunderbird experts

A friend has lost access to his Tbird database of emails, folders, address
book, etc. He went on Mozilla and found out that "this occasionally happens
when you use the default profile." He followed a set of instructions (copy
file to another location, start Profile Manager, create a new  named
profile, select the copy of the datafile) with no success.

Since the copy is on an external hard drive, could he take it to another
system and use/load Tbird on that system to get access? Would it work to
uninstall/reinstall Tbird on his system? Or is there some gotcha that he
didn't know that caused the recovery procedure to fail?

Any thoughts or suggestions?
