TSGL: XP SP3

In my experience AMD processors are as good as anything else. 
It may be that the fix XP-KB953356-x86-ENU.exe for AMD CPU boards solves the problem. 
I have a very old MOBO (8 years) which started having problems ONLY when I added a USB2
card. Then BSODs and freeze ups became a way of life. The external USB BUSLINK worked
flawlessly, but I had to abandon using the 1 terrabyte USB OMEGA. My son warned me about
using USB1 and USB2 on the same machine, but disabling the USB1 in BIOS did NOT improve
the situation. 
That is when I got religion about full volume backups using Drive Image. 
My HP laptop took the SP3 upgrade graciously, but it is only 1 year old.

I installed SP3,
 an ATI video driver caused a BSOD,
I reverted to my last full drive backup, installed a recommended ATI fix, re-installed
SP3, ATI video driver caused another BSOD, reverted again to my last full drive backup.

I am now licking my wounds, thinking about my next step.
I do have an AMD processor.

Well, MS has invited me to install SP3 on my 2 machines. But before I accept this most
generous invitation I'd like some feedback.

Who has installed it and what was your experience?

The size ranges from 67 - 316 MB. Since my machines are up to date can I expect the 67 MB
size or perhaps even less?

Any comments welcome. MS updates of this magnitude always produce agita for me.
