Thanks Tilman.

The MSKB article was, as is often the case, as helpful as a bathtub full of 
water.

However, my own researches showed that in order for RPC services (and some 
others) to run, it's first necessary to start DCOM service. For some 
reason, it was on manual and not started.

That was the solution and the hard drive is now up and running.

One day sometime soon, we might get a Windows version with error messages 
that are actually helpful.
Shall we hold our collective breaths?
